Metronome
Rhythm & Timing
A device or app that produces a steady click at a set tempo to help you practice keeping time.
A metronome produces a steady, audible click (or beat) at a specific tempo. It's the single most important practice tool for developing solid rhythm and timing. Practicing with a metronome trains your internal clock and reveals timing issues you can't hear otherwise.
Start every new song or technique at a comfortable tempo — slow enough that you can play cleanly with no mistakes. Only increase the speed (typically by 5-10 BPM at a time) once you can play perfectly at the current tempo three times in a row.
Modern digital metronomes and apps offer features beyond a simple click: accent patterns, subdivision options, tap tempo, and gradual tempo increases. Some can even mute every other bar, testing whether you can maintain time independently.
Try practicing with the metronome on beats 2 and 4 only (set it to half the song tempo). This trains you to feel the backbeat and develops a much stronger internal sense of time.
